Planning a Maldives Honeymoon Without Overspending

Overwater villa or beach villa, resort island or local island, seaplane or speedboat — the four decisions that set the price of a Maldives trip.

Maldives quotes vary more wildly than anywhere else we sell — the same week can be ₹60,000 a couple or ₹6,00,000. Four decisions account for almost all of that spread.

1. Resort island or local island

Resort islands are one island, one hotel. Total privacy, alcohol served, beachwear anywhere, all-inclusive options. Local islands — Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhigurah — are inhabited communities with guesthouses at roughly a third of the price.

The water and the reefs are identical. What differs is that local islands have a designated bikini beach, no alcohol on the island itself, and neighbours. Many couples split the trip: three nights local, two nights resort. You get the photographs and keep the budget.

2. How you get there

This is the cost nobody quotes upfront. Resorts near Malé are a 30–45 minute speedboat, around $150–250 per person return. Distant atolls need a seaplane, $400–700 per person return, and seaplanes only fly in daylight — an evening arrival means a night in Malé at your own cost.

A resort $100 a night cheaper on a distant atoll is not cheaper once the seaplane is added. Always compare the total.

3. Overwater or beach villa

Overwater villas typically cost 40 to 60 per cent more. They are worth it for the deck, the steps into the lagoon and the glass floor panel. Beach villas often have more space, direct sand access and better privacy from passing boats.

A trick that works: book a beach villa for most of the stay and one overwater night at the end. You get the experience without paying for it across the whole trip.

4. Meal plan

Bed-and-breakfast looks cheapest until you see the restaurant. Resort islands have no alternative — a modest dinner runs $60–100 per person. Half board is usually the sweet spot; all-inclusive pays off only if you drink.

When to go

January to April is peak: dry, calm, and priced accordingly. May to October is the wet season, with rain in short bursts and prices 30 to 40 per cent lower. Late April and early November sit in between and are the best value.

What actually makes the trip

Not the villa category. It is the house reef — whether you can swim off your own beach into live coral — the sandbank picnic, and the sunset dolphin cruise. Choose the resort for its reef before its room, and you will not be disappointed.
