Dubai is the easiest first stamp in a new passport. Flights from every major Indian metro land in under four hours, the visa is quick, and almost everyone you meet speaks a language you already know.

The city does spectacle better than anywhere else. You can stand on the 148th floor of the Burj Khalifa in the morning, sand-board down an orange dune in the afternoon and watch the Dubai Fountain from a wooden abra at night. Old Dubai balances it out — the spice and gold souks of Deira, the wind-tower houses of Al Fahidi and a plate of hot machboos on a plastic chair by the creek.

Families come for the theme parks and aquariums, honeymooners for the desert camps and beach resorts, and shoppers for the Dubai Shopping Festival in January.
