The 2026 Visa Guide for Indian Passport Holders
Which countries give Indians visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry, what the Schengen process actually involves, and the paperwork mistakes that get applications refused.
The Indian passport opens more doors every year, but the rules are scattered across dozens of embassy websites and change without much notice. Here is the practical version, current for the 2026 travel season.
Where you can go without applying in advance
Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Fiji and most of the Caribbean either waive the visa entirely or grant one on arrival. In practice this means you book flights first and worry about paperwork at the airport — but "visa on arrival" is not the same as "no requirements".
You will still be asked for a return ticket, proof of accommodation and sometimes proof of funds. Immigration officers do check, particularly on one-way bookings, and being turned back at the counter is an expensive way to learn that.
The UAE: quick, but book through someone
Dubai's tourist visa is processed in three to four working days and is almost always issued. It has to be sponsored — by an airline, a hotel or a licensed tour operator — so it is not something you apply for directly. This is one of the few places where booking a package genuinely saves you effort rather than just money.
Schengen: start early, and be boring
One application covers twenty-nine European countries. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, or the first one you enter if the nights are even.
Appointment slots are the real bottleneck. Between April and August they can be booked out six to eight weeks ahead, which means a July holiday needs its paperwork moving in April. Consulates accept applications up to six months before travel.
The single most common reason for refusal is not a weak bank balance. It is an itinerary that does not match the bookings, or a bank statement showing a large deposit that appeared a week before applying.
Visa officers are looking for evidence that you will come back. A stable job, family ties, property, and a travel history of returning on time all count. A sudden unexplained lump sum in an account does the opposite of what people think it does.
What you need, more or less everywhere
- A passport valid at least six months past your return date, with two blank pages
- Photographs to the destination's exact specification — Schengen wants 35×45mm with 80% face coverage, and studios routinely get this wrong
- Six months of bank statements, stamped by the bank
- Confirmed return flights and hotel bookings for the full stay
- Employment proof — a leave letter and last three salary slips, or business registration if self-employed
- Travel insurance meeting the minimum cover, €30,000 for Schengen
Four mistakes worth avoiding
- Applying too late. Nothing can be done about a consulate with no appointments left.
- Booking non-refundable flights first. Book refundable or hold a reservation until the visa is granted.
- An itinerary that contradicts the bookings. If the plan says four nights in Rome, the hotel voucher must too.
- Insurance that falls short. Cover has to match the exact dates and the minimum amount, or the file is rejected on the spot.
