Arrive in Paris

Arrive at Charles de Gaulle and transfer to your hotel near the Opéra. Evening at leisure with dinner at a nearby brasserie.

Paris city tour and dinner at the Eiffel Tower

A morning guided tour of the city, afternoon at the Louvre with skip-the-line entry, then dinner at the 58 Tour Eiffel restaurant on the first level with a window table reserved.

Versailles and a private Seine cruise

A half day at the Palace of Versailles and its gardens, returning by early afternoon. In the evening, a private one-hour Seine cruise with sparkling wine as the city lights come on.

Rail to Switzerland, afternoon in Lucerne

The TGV Lyria to Basel and on to Lucerne. Afternoon by the lake — the Chapel Bridge and the old town — then continue to your hotel in Grindelwald or Interlaken.

Jungfraujoch and the Aletsch glacier

The full Jungfraujoch day — cogwheel railway to 3,454 metres, the Ice Palace, the Sphinx observation terrace and the view down the Aletsch, the longest glacier in the Alps.

Lake Lucerne cruise and Mount Pilatus

A steamer across Lake Lucerne, then the world's steepest cogwheel railway up Mount Pilatus and the aerial cableway back down. All covered by your Swiss Travel Pass.

A free day in the Bernese Oberland

Yours to use. Grindelwald First and the cliff walk, the Trümmelbach falls inside the mountain, Lauterbrunnen and its seventy-two waterfalls, or paragliding over Interlaken.

Ten days, and nothing went wrong

Four countries with elderly parents could have been a disaster. Every train was booked, every ticket was ready, and the tour manager knew exactly where to be. I would not attempt Europe independently again.
