The Maldives honeymoon most couples picture: an overwater villa with steps into the lagoon, half board so you are not doing arithmetic at every meal, and two set-pieces — a sunset dolphin cruise and a private sandbank dinner.

We book resorts with a genuine house reef, so snorkelling is a five-minute swim rather than a paid excursion. The speedboat transfer is included both ways, which is the cost most quoted Maldives prices quietly leave out.

Tell us it is your honeymoon at the time of booking and we will arrange the room decoration, a cake and a bottle of sparkling wine with the resort.

Arrive at Malé, speedboat to the resort

Land at Velana International Airport where the resort representative meets you past baggage claim. A 45-minute speedboat crosses to the island. Check into your overwater villa, then spend the afternoon on your deck and the evening at the main restaurant.

House reef snorkelling and the sunset dolphin cruise

Morning snorkelling on the house reef with equipment from the dive centre — expect reef sharks, turtles and parrotfish in the first ten metres. Afternoon free. At around 5pm a dhoni takes you out for the sunset dolphin cruise; spinner dolphins here travel in pods of fifty or more.

Sandbank picnic and a private beach dinner

A boat drops you on a bare sandbank in the middle of the ocean for a couple of hours with a picnic hamper and nothing else around. Afternoon at the spa or on the deck. In the evening, a private candlelit dinner set up on the beach for two.

At leisure — water sports and the spa

A full free day. Kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear are complimentary; scuba dives, jet skis and the couples spa treatment can be added on the island. Most couples do very little, which is the point.

Departure

Breakfast, then the speedboat back to Malé timed to your flight. Late check-out is available on request and subject to the resort.
