Goa works because it asks nothing of you. Flights are cheap, hotels are plentiful, and the entire state is small enough that you are never more than an hour from wherever you want to be.

North Goa — Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator — is the busy half, with the Saturday night market, beach clubs and a scooter culture that makes exploring easy. South Goa — Palolem, Agonda, Colva — is quieter, greener and better for families or anyone who wants to read a book uninterrupted.

Between beaches there is Old Goa's basilica, the spice plantations inland, Dudhsagar falls in the monsoon and a Mandovi river cruise at sunset. Peak season runs mid-December to early January and prices roughly double, so shoulder months are the smart booking.
