Munnar is tea country — plantations stacked up the slopes, Eravikulam National Park and mornings cold enough for a jacket. Thekkady adds spice gardens and a boat ride on the Periyar lake. Then Alleppey, where you board a converted rice barge, drift through the backwaters past villages and paddy fields, and eat karimeen fried on board while the light goes.

Finish at Kovalam or Varkala on the coast, or in Fort Kochi for Chinese fishing nets, a Kathakali performance and colonial-era streets worth walking. Ayurvedic treatments are genuine here — we only use government-classified centres. The monsoon between June and August is the traditional season for treatment, and prices are at their lowest.
