Three nights in a private-pool villa in Ubud and three on the coast, with a floating breakfast, the Kecak fire dance and a couples spa.

Bali splits neatly in two and this itinerary gives you both halves. Three nights inland at Ubud — rice terraces, temples, jungle — in a villa with a private pool, then three nights south on the coast for beaches and sunsets.

The set-pieces are the ones worth doing: a floating breakfast in your own pool, Tegallalang before the tour buses, the Kecak fire dance on the Uluwatu cliff at sunset, and a two-hour couples spa treatment.

Indonesia grants visa on arrival to Indian passport holders, so paperwork is minimal.

Arrive at Denpasar, transfer to Ubud

Land at Ngurah Rai International, complete visa on arrival and meet your driver. Around 90 minutes north to Ubud. Check into your private-pool villa and spend the evening on Jalan Raya — the art market, the palace and dinner.

Floating breakfast, rice terraces and the swing

A floating breakfast served on a tray in your private pool. Then Tegallalang rice terraces early to beat the crowds, the Bali swing over the valley, a Luwak coffee plantation tasting and the Tirta Empul holy spring temple.

Mount Batur sunrise and a couples spa

An optional pre-dawn start for the Mount Batur sunrise trek — an active volcano, about two hours up, and worth the alarm. Back by midday for a two-hour couples Balinese massage and flower bath at the villa spa. Afternoon free.

Ubud to the south coast via Tanah Lot

Check out and drive south, stopping at Taman Ayun and Tanah Lot — the sea temple on a rock formation, best in the afternoon light. Continue to your beach resort in Seminyak or Nusa Dua and check in.

Nusa Penida day trip

An early speedboat to Nusa Penida for the island's west coast — Kelingking Beach and its T-rex cliff, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong and snorkelling at Crystal Bay. A long day on rough roads, and the best photographs of the trip.

Uluwatu temple and the Kecak fire dance

A slow morning at the beach or the resort pool. Late afternoon to Uluwatu — the clifftop temple 70 metres above the sea, then the Kecak fire dance performed at sunset. Seafood dinner on the sand at Jimbaran Bay afterwards.
