The affordable Maldives on local islands, with a resort day pass, whale-shark snorkelling and surf breaks off Thulusdhoo.

The Maldives without the resort premium. Local islands opened to tourism in 2009 and now have proper guesthouses, dive centres and restaurants at roughly a third of resort prices.

You stay on Maafushi and Thulusdhoo, snorkel with whale sharks and manta rays in South Ari Atoll, and buy a day pass to a five-star resort island so you still get the overwater-villa photographs.

Local islands are inhabited communities, so beachwear is limited to the designated bikini beach and alcohol is not served on the islands themselves. Worth knowing before you book.

Arrive at Malé, speedboat to Maafushi

Meet your transfer at Velana airport and take the 90-minute public speedboat to Maafushi. Check into your guesthouse, walk the island — it takes about twenty minutes end to end — and watch sunset from the bikini beach.

Whale sharks and manta rays in South Ari Atoll

A full-day boat trip south to the whale shark corridor. Snorkelling with whale sharks and, in season, manta rays at a cleaning station, with two more reef stops and lunch served on board. Guided by a local marine team throughout.

Resort day pass and a sandbank stop

A day pass to a nearby five-star resort island — pool, private beach, lunch and a drink included, and the overwater villas to photograph. On the way back the boat stops at a sandbank for an hour.

Transfer to Thulusdhoo

A morning speedboat to Thulusdhoo, a quieter island known for its surf breaks and the Coke factory. Afternoon snorkelling off the beach, evening free.

Surf, snorkel or simply nothing

A free day. Surf lessons at Cokes and Chickens for beginners through to experienced surfers, a dive at a nearby thila, or a fishing trip at sunset with the catch grilled for dinner.

Departure

Speedboat back to Malé airport, timed to your flight. Half a day in the capital can be added if your flight is late.
