Arrive in Kochi, drive to Munnar

Land at Kochi and drive four hours into the hills, stopping at the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls and a tea stall along the way. Check in at Munnar and spend the evening at leisure — it gets cold, so carry a jacket.

Munnar tea estates and Eravikulam

Eravikulam National Park in the morning for the Nilgiri tahr and the Rajamala viewpoint, then the Tea Museum with a processing demonstration and tasting. Afternoon at Mattupetty dam, Echo Point and the Kundala lake.

Munnar to Thekkady, Periyar boat safari

Drive to Thekkady through cardamom hills. Afternoon boat safari on the Periyar lake with a chance of elephant and bison at the water's edge, then a spice plantation walk and a Kalaripayattu martial arts demonstration in the evening.

Thekkady to Alleppey, board the houseboat

Drive down to Alleppey and board your private houseboat around noon. Cruise the backwaters through villages and paddy fields, with lunch, evening tea and dinner cooked on board. The boat anchors overnight in a quiet channel.

Disembark and on to Kochi

Breakfast on the houseboat and disembark around 9am. Drive to Kochi for Fort Kochi — the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church, Jew Town and the Dutch Palace — and a Kathakali performance in the evening.

Worth booking through an operator
